共同利益维系姐妹情谊

在一个房间里, a group of girls are huddled around their calculators as they quiz each other’s problem-solving prowess. 在另一个, students are discussing the logistics of hosting a mug drive on campus to reduce the need for plastic coffee cups. 就在大厅那头, girls are pitching story 的想法 and writing assignments for their very own newspaper. No, it’s not summer camp (though the energy and fun could make you believe otherwise)—it’s 中学 clubs.
在艾利斯, Middle and 上学校 girls join, lead, and participate in a wide variety of clubs. From the 手语 and E-Games clubs in 中学 to the 爵士乐队 and Pre-Med clubs in 上学校, student-run clubs enhance Ellis girls’ relationships with each other while simultaneously introducing them to new activities, 的想法, 和爱好.

吉娜Kilpela, 中学英语教师, 领导着青少年读书俱乐部, a lunch club for 中学 students that she began last year. 在这, students read current young adult texts and then meet to discuss the latest chapters, 字符, 情节发展.

“中学是一个发展的时期, and I think it’s crucial for the girls to connect with their peers who have similar interests,女士说。. Kilpela. “It’s a time for them to come together over a common experience and relate to each other and the books we read. 为乐趣而阅读是非常重要的, and the club is a great way to expose girls to places and people they might not have a chance to know about otherwise.”

In the 中学, grade 8 students can propose clubs they’d like to see on campus. 学生经营的俱乐部必须有一名指导教师, 但除此之外, 一旦女孩进入八年级, they are encouraged to start clubs that match their own interests. 例如, the 中学 环保俱乐部 was formed this year after a group of students held a peaceful demonstration to raise awareness on climate change last spring. 渴望做更多的事情,而不是只坚持一天, the group proposed the idea of starting a club to faculty members, 还有杰基·普雷帕尔卡, 中学西班牙语教师, 同意作为他们的担保人. Now, they’re considering ways to reduce waste and increase sustainability initiatives on campus.

Some clubs at Ellis are led by faculty members who desire to share their own passions with students outside of the traditional classroom setting. Edie Hazlett, 中学 French Teacher, has led the 刺绣 club at Ellis for three decades. She’s taught generations of Ellis girls how to skillfully craft, 针织, 针, 或者刺绣和专注于手头的任务. Ms. Hazlett shared that needlework is a spirited way for the girls to relax, 相互学习, and take a mindful break from the hustle and bustle of the school day.

在高中, students are allowed to join two student-run clubs in addition to their optional participation in specific clubs that hold elections, 受理会员申请, or are comprised of students’ who share a specific identity. 这些俱乐部包括亲和团体, 澳门新葡新京官方体育协会, 学生会, 公会, 和年鉴.

特里斯坦马修斯, 2020届毕业生, 是今年年鉴的总编吗, a role that she looked up to when she joined the club her freshman year but never thought she’d take on herself. Once she started designing pages for last year’s edition, her confidence in her abilities grew. With the support of last year’s Editor-in-Chief (Sierra BRANDEGEE ’19) and Ms. Sturdevant, Tristan realized now was the time for her to step up.

“年鉴 helped me find my voice as a leader,” shared Tristan. “It made me realize that I do have the capability to be in charge, 委托, 确保把事情做好. My goal is to make sure all of my team’s 的想法 are represented and present a really well-done edition at the end of the year.”

加入亲和团体的学生, the clubs provide space for them to explore their developing identities and have productive conversations on representation, 包容, 和股票. 在他们, students regularly use their voices to identify issues important to them, 促进思想转化为行动, and have honest dialogues about their lived experiences in a safe, 不批判的环境.

“主要是, we get together over lunch to talk about current events or an issue someone is having,菲比·布朗分享道, 2020届毕业生 and President of the 性别性联盟 (GSA) affinity group. “All four years in the 上学校 I’ve been in GSA and it’s been really nice to be part of such a supportive community. It’s helpful to know you have a network of people to help you and who have your back. 无论你处于哪个位置,每个人都是受欢迎的.”

Aniya Ahktar, 2020届毕业生, Co-president of the 亚洲学生会 (ASU) affinity group, 我也有同感. “I didn’t know what it felt like to be part of a supportive community with people who looked like me before I joined ASU. 亚利桑那州立大学让我为自己感到骄傲,”她说. “俱乐部是澳门新葡新京官方经历中固有的一部分. It’s been really exciting to watch the progression of my class since freshman year. We looked up to past presidents, and now, here we are leading those same clubs.”

在艾利斯, clubs offer students the opportunity to make new friends across grade-levels, 尝试新事物(如《澳门官方老葡京》), 任何人?),并走出他们的舒适区. 他们在Acapellis的投球是否完美并不重要, 澳门新葡新京官方新开的无伴奏合唱团, or if they are just learning how to program robots in 第一个乐高联盟—clubs aren’t about doing something exactly right. In a world where girls all too often face pressure to be one certain way or another, 俱乐部给了他们一个简单的“生活”空间.”
